Local Governing Committee

The Local Governing Committee (LGC) is a group of volunteers who provide local assurance to the Trust Board about how well the school is serving its pupils and community.

The LGC does not manage the day-to-day running of the school. That responsibility sits with the Headteacher and senior leaders. Instead, the LGC focusses on the key priorities for the school, seeking assurance that standards are strong, safeguarding is effective, and that pupils are receiving a high-quality education. This includes reviewing evidence, asking focused questions and ensuring that leaders can demonstrate impact.

Working within the governance structure of Soke Education Trust, the LGC brings local knowledge and context, and provides insight from the community to support informed decision-making at Trust level.

If you would like further information about the work of the LGC, or are interested in becoming a governor, please contact the Clerk to Governors at clerk2@sokeeducationtrust.co.uk

Nicky Baker - Co-opted Governor (Chair)

Co-opted Governor (Chair)

I am the Chair of the Local Governing Committee at Alderman Jacobs Primary School. I spent my entire career working at the school, where I built strong relationships with pupils, families and colleagues over many years. Now retired, I continue to live locally and take a keen interest in the school and its community, and I take great pride in seeing former pupils progress in their lives and careers.

I bring a strong understanding of the school and the wider challenges facing education. I have previously served on the governing committee of a local secondary school and now focus my time on supporting Alderman Jacobs through my role on the LGC.

Brett Mead - Parent Governor (Vice Chair)

Parent Governor (Vice Chair)

I am a parent governor at Alderman Jacobs Primary School, where my two sons attend. As a former pupil, I have a strong personal connection to the school and am committed to supporting it to achieve its aspirations and strategic priorities.

I work as a Change Delivery Manager, leading three software engineering teams of around 25–30 people with varied skills, backgrounds and perspectives. My role involves building a positive, open culture where people can contribute constructively, and working with senior stakeholders to develop and deliver roadmaps aligned to strategic objectives. This experience supports my role as a governor, where clear communication, constructive challenge and alignment of priorities are essential.

I am also committed to contributing to the wider community, regularly supporting charitable initiatives through fundraising activities such as running events, organising local events and community fundraising.

Martin Fry - Headteacher

Headteacher

After teaching in London and the USA earlier in my career, I worked for over 16 years as a Headteacher in Peterborough, including spells as an Executive Headteacher and Director of Primary Education in a Multi-Academy Trust.  I was delighted to be appointed as Headteacher at Alderman Jacobs in January 2024 and join the Local Governing Committee within the Soke Education Trust.

I aim to build on the many strengths of the school and ensure that every child is safe and happy and, through our curriculum,  is equipped with the knowledge, skills and understanding to succeed in later life. Our Governors have a key role in supporting school leaders to analyse and review important aspects of school life, especially safeguarding, pupil outcomes and special educational needs, offering a balance of support and challenge.

Eleanor Gunn - Co-opted Governor

Co-opted Governor

I am a Co-opted governor at Alderman Jacobs Primary School. As a mother of two young children, one of whom attends the school, I care deeply about the role education and a strong school community play in children’s lives. I believe all children should have access to an education that is ambitious, responsive and inclusive, and that this is underpinned by a culture where pupils, families and staff feel connected, supported and secure.

I am a Clinical Psychologist with over ten years’ experience working with children, adults and wider systems to support psychological wellbeing. My work has included supporting education settings, and I currently work with families in the perinatal period. I also have experience in service development, audit and research.

I am committed to contributing to the school community by supporting a positive, inclusive environment and providing effective local assurance through my role on the governing committee.

Sarah Miles - Staff Governor

Staff Governor

I am an Assistant Headteacher and Staff Governor at Alderman Jacobs Primary School, with a strong focus on school improvement, assessment, and staff wellbeing. I bring experience in mentoring teachers and subject leaders, alongside leading English, with a track record of supporting sustained improvements in pupil progress and teaching quality.

I have a comprehensive understanding of assessment systems, using both formative and summative data to inform teaching, curriculum development, and whole-school strategy. This allows me to contribute clear, evidence-informed perspectives within governance, grounded in day-to-day school practice.

As a member of the staff wellbeing team, I support initiatives that strengthen staff voice, professional satisfaction, and organisational culture. I am committed to representing staff views with clarity and integrity, underpinned by strong professional relationships built on honesty and trust.

Michelle Atkins - Parent Governor

Parent Governor

I am forever passionate about AJS - it was my primary school many years ago, and I’m delighted to be supporting the school as a parent governor.

Professionally, I am a solicitor, specialising in commercial law. I was partner of a law firm for many years, before taking a step back to enjoy more time with my son, who is currently in Year 3 at AJS.  My 20-year legal background has equipped me with strong communication and analytical skills, sound judgement, and a sharp eye for detail - qualities I’m keen to bring to the Local Governing Board.

I love being involved in all aspects of my son’s education and interests, whether that’s on the football pitch, with FOAJS events, or volunteering on school trips. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed working with children in a variety of roles, from swimming coach and Brownie leader to teaching English in Thailand.

I’m committed to ensuring that AJS continues to provide a high quality, nurturing education for every child - helping them grow into happy, confident, and thriving learners.

Gavin Cooke - Co-Opted Governor

I am a parent and an experienced Deputy Headteacher, and I am proud to serve on the local governing body at Alderman Jacobs Primary School. I am committed to supporting the school’s continued development and ensuring the best possible outcomes for all pupils.

I bring a strong understanding of curriculum leadership, safeguarding, and school improvement planning. My day-to-day role involves working closely with staff, pupils, and families to foster a positive learning environment and uphold high standards of teaching and behaviour. This enables me to contribute meaningfully to strategic discussions and offer informed challenge and support to the leadership team.

As a parent, I am passionate about inclusive education and ensuring that every child feels safe, valued, and inspired to learn. I am committed to working collaboratively with fellow governors to uphold the school’s values and help shape its future direction.
